Well the oldest kid just graduated high school today. Now the bad part is the cost of going to college. WOW!! Glad he got some academic money to go to the school he wants to go to. But still 11,000 a year....ouch... _________________ If you find a tree big enough to get behind, push your teammate out from behind it.

congrats... you could do what my parents did and give them a certain amount that they have to help pay per year. i paid 5000 a year instead of having to pay back loans afterwards. To top it off the 5000 went towards loans that were taken for academics that I never had to see. in the end it boosted my credit and i never really had to worry about anything. _________________ Stay low, run fast, and hope that paintball doesnt hit your ...

yea he has to do the loan thing. i can't swing another 950.00 a month./ But we are goingt to pay on the interest so that will help keep it down some.
We are also encouraging him to try for the resident assitant on campus and get paid for the room and board. My wife and I did it in college and got a room to ourselves also.
He plans to play soccer there as he likes the coach and try for the engeneering degree. _________________ If you find a tree big enough to get behind, push your teammate out from behind it.

11,000 a year is not bad at all. I pay close to 20,000 a year after books etc. He's lucky you guys are helping pay, my parents kicked me out and wished me best on paying for it on my own. Which I am still doing.
Make sure he does his FAFSA and puts the lowest possible LEGAL values on it. The less money you guys make, the more money he gets. The government is giving a lot of money in grants now, and in federal loans (which are usually fixed at 6% apr) since most private companies (IE Sallie Mae) and the big wigs have almost completely shut off all decent private loan funding.
I am getting about $3,000 from a Pell grant I will never have to pay back a semester. Thats $9,000 a year (3 semesters in my year round schooling). So your son will only have to have $3,000 in federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans depending on how many semesters he has.
Definitely do some research. There are a lot of ways to get free money if you look. Also have him talk to a GOOD loan officer at his school. I have met some that have their thumbs up their asses and they don't help at all.
What school is he going to? |

Wings
Thanks for the suggestions....we did it all and can not qualify for anymore loans amount then he has gotten already. It sucks but he got most of the money 12000 in scholarship money based on his grades and taking the placement test with them.
He knows we are going to have to have him do the loans thing and we will pay the interest to keep it racking up in him. Hopefully we can get the books paid for him also. _________________ If you find a tree big enough to get behind, push your teammate out from behind it.
