So, I've seen some people on here talking bad about the Land.  What happened there that made you all dislike it so much?  I've never been there but I was planning on going Sunday.

Poor reffing, small woodsball field, no competition, if you are just interested on playing paintball it's fine but I only get to play one and very really twice a month so it's hard for me to justify it. OD

The field's main attraction is that it is CLOSE.   Really, that's about all it has going for it right now.    If you need to play, you can often have a reasonably pleasant day there- or you can have a shitty nightmare of a day that makes you want to quit the sport in frustration.   A couple of the guys on the team have  had the latter, and refuse to go back.

The price is highish, depending how much paint you will be shooting and whether you'll be buying it from them.  CO2 refills are ridiculous- if you play with a small tank you may spend more on air than paint.

There is no comprehensive list of field rules posted anywhere.   The refs sometimes will tell everyone the rules before the first game, but they never cover them all, so you find out about things like gun hits, bunkering, surrendering, firing modes, and field boundaries as players get into arguments about them.

The field boundaries are not marked.   Sometimes the hill side boundary is halfway up, sometimes it is 6 ft. up, sometimes 3, sometimes at the base.    Every ref makes up their own rule.   Squirrely can tell you the official height - but nobody has bothered to tell all of the refs.

The refs are mostly young, non-confrontational outnumbered, and generally  lazy.     They have no particular interest in getting in as many games as possible, so if you have some slow-moving walk-ons or one loud-mouth who likes to spend more time talking about his exploits than playing, the ref will just hang out and you'll get one 15 minute game per hour.

The woodsball field is too narrow.   They won't let you play on the hillside, which is the only way to move down the field with any stealth.   Without it you can shoot across the entire width of the field- and you can see to do so.  This means every game ends up as a stalemate at the choke point around the big center fort.     Both sides dig in until one side (usually the one starting uphill) manages to eliminate enough of the other team to punch through.   The refs seem to like this, as they can just stand on the hill and watch the game without moving much.   Don't expect a ref to ever paintcheck you or the opposition unless you are close to that point.

And don't expect the refs to help you if a pack of assholes decides to wipe constantly, fire full auto into your back as you leave the field with your gun socked and over your head, or physically get in your face and threaten you.

The field does have a lot of unused potential.  If they put paintball netting all the way along the top of the hill and let you use the whole hillside, removed the large center fort and replaced it with  a lot of smaller bunkers and fast-growing brush to cover movement, and moved the uphill starting point all the way to the edge of the woods to maximize the field size it would be a nice little field.   Then they need to get some more refs who can keep control of the players; post all the rules- in the clubhouse, in the shop, and in each dead box; and come up with more reasonable prices for CO2 and field paint.

That's a shame.  I wish there were something close and reasonable.

Not only are the refs not so professional, there really not even paid. Except in paint or free play. Two of my friends Herman (teammember) and a kid i went to high school with both reffed / reff there but no pay...it really doesnt help things.

That explains a lot.   They must have a lot of overhead in rent then, if the field fees and paint aren't even going to pay the staff.

That really sucks.  Especially since the only other real alternative is Fran Bar and I have heard that is a free for all.

There's lots of glass and metal on the FB hoochie field, and the buildings are falling down- but I grew up playing in woodlots and old houses with trash piles and barbed wire everywhere- that's what makes the kevlar knees on the Smokin pants so nice.

Fran Bar can be fun if your group is the ONLY one there, so you can set your own rules and stick to them.   The last time I was there it was kinda fun, but there was this one walk-on who claimed to know the "official" rules, and kept stopping play to tell us we weren't supposed to go there, or do this, or shoot from this close.   He was super annoying.  But Sunshine turned out to be a decent guy once he joined the team.  Twisted Evil

I was the head ref / field manager there for about one year.... What he said.  I ran the place right but I couldn't justify working every Saturday and not being able actually see my family for just the love of the game.

hey hey now. ok i admit i was a total prick that day. but u have to give me a break, i was on a team full of noobs vs a well-hardened old school delta squad. i had to do whatever i can to give myself a fighting chance. and i believe i went home with a fairly well decorated backside from a few delta guys (BD). but hey as they say, if u cant beat em, join em
