Myron D. Emmel, age 93, of Napoleon, Ohio, passed away Thursday morning at the Alpine Village Assisted Living, Napoleon, Ohio.
Myron was born on July 30, 1914 in rural Henry County to William H. and Dora (Leonhardt) Emmel. On Nov. 27, 1942, he married Pauline B. DeVerna and they were blessed with two daughters, Dr. Dee Ann Lewis of Toronto, Canada, and Mrs. Jeanne Westhoven of Napoleon; and three grandchildren, Josh Westhoven, Shawn (Allison) Westhoven and Elise (Brian) Buchhop; and one great-grandaughter, Faeth Buchhop.
He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Holgate, where he served as elder and congregation moderator.
A veteran of World War II, he served in Europe with the 9th Airborne Squadron of the 9th Army Air Corps. He was awarded five Bronze Service Stars and the Belgian Fourragere. He was a member of the Napoleon American Legion Post #300, a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo, Henry County Scottish Rite Association and a 50-year member of the Napoleon Elks Lodge #929. He was a retired farmer and a retired employee at Compo Corp. in Defiance. He was a former member of the Florida Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived also by one sister, Mrs. Jeanette Ort, Defiance, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife on May 19, 2000; three sisters, Mrs. Iris Webb, Mrs. Thyra Lourash, Mrs. Mildred Sohn; and one brother, Maynard Emmel.
Services will be held at 12 noon Saturday in the Walker Mortuary, Napoleon, Ohio, Rev. Jane Hillman officiating. Interment will be made in Florida Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the joint veterans posts of Napoleon.
Friends may call at the mortuary on Saturday from 10 a.m. up until the time of the service, where a masonic service will be held at 11 a.m.
The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the St. John’s U.C.C. Music Fund, the Henry County Hospice, the Alpine Village or to a charity of the donor’s choice. |
Grampa had a good 93-year run, stayed around long enough for his great-granddaughter to get to know him, and went quickly and painlessly. Mom will be better off not having to care for him, though she doesn't feel that way right now.
I hate pity posts, so if you feel compelled to do something, please send a sympathy card to my mother instead. For what she knew would be Grampa's last birthday this July, she contacted everyone she knew and everyone at his church and had them send him birthday cards. He got hundreds, and it both perplexed and pleased him. I think she'd be touched to receive cards from my friends.
