Radios and Vest

So I saw somewhere about a list and order of equipment that should be bought.  I am pretty much down to needing radios so i was doing a little bit of searching on the web.

I found these: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos...&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

I think these will work fine but I'd like to get your opinions on them.

Also, I was on the Rap4 website and I saw their vests were on sale for $35 bucks (Not including upgrades).  Should I invest in this or should I hold out.  I already have a Gen X vest but if I ever join up with Delta I'd like to have the gear to boot.
Bulldog

We use UHF radios rather than FRS/GMRS now.     Most people use FRS/GMRS, so we went with something they can't listen in on.     For the UHFs there's a thread here somewhere with the details.

If you want an FRS/GMRS I have all kinds I'd bought before we made the change that I would sell cheap.

That's a good price on the RAP4 vest, but if you make the team I'm sure we can beat it.
Royals

Well, I'd like to be able to communicate with you guys.  What's more, I'd like to make the team.

Even from the one game I played yesterday communication was the key to our victory.  Radios would have made things ten times better but we used runners for communication.

So, in hopes of joining Delta I will hold off on buying that vest.
olddog

We have extra radios for player to use until can get yours, average price is $80.00. OD

The model you want is the Puxing PX 777 - be sure you get UHF, not VHF.
Available from www.Radiogearpro.com
Royals

I have to tell you, you guys are awesome.

It's getting to be crunch time at my work so I will be working the next two weekends.  I'm sure I can put some of that extra income towards a radio and a pending vest/uniform.
Fets

Guys, our team is looking to upgrade radios...

Why did you choose UHF over VHF, or what is the difference? Are these radios encrypted or you just have privacy because everyone else uses GMRS?

What made you choose the Puxing PX 777, and how is headset availability (are they dual pin)?

If you could help me get started I would appreciate it!
Bulldog

We went with UHF because the teams we operate with at Sherwood already had it- there's not a big difference in price, and for paintball there's no difference in performance.

The PX 777 PLUS has encryption, iirc, but the other teams don't have it and UHF is obscure enough that we don't worry about monitoring by the other team.    The FCC, on the other hand...    Wink

We went with Puxing because they are reliable and cheap, and the vendor OD linked to is fast.   Any Kenwood 2-pin accessory will work with them.

There was a crew playing for the opposition Sherwood that was HEAVY on monitoring our FRS/GMRS comms and using them against us.   I haven't seen much evidence that they are still doing this the last two years, but we've also been using more and more UHF, so maybe they're still out there listening to the players who aren't on the UHF command channels.
olddog

Is this coming for the guys that where at Sherwood this weekend?

The UHF radios have so much more penetrating power through the heavy wood that all others. We have not had any problems communicating with other on large fields like Sherwood. I would not buy anything else.

Fet let your guys know that they played well at Sherwood this weekend and I would run with them anytime. OD
Bulldog

We've played with and against NEOSMUT up at Battlefront a couple times.
Royals

Well, I am all ready to order my vest and radio.  I've been killing the OT at work and these 60 hour weeks are paying off.

If we need to order anything else let me know so we can do one big order.

This is what I will need/want in order, membership pending.

Radio
Vest
BDU/Team Camo
12" Lapco Apex Ready Barrel to replace my 8"
Tactical Hopper
Red Dot Scope
Stock A5 Grip
Back Up Marker (Most likely another A-5)

Tell me if this sounds about right.  I already have my A-5 with a SAW stock, Apex Barrel, 2pt sling, raised sight rail, remote coil, 2x 20oz tanks, tactical vest, woodland camo, mask.

Thanks, I will let them know you said that. They had a great time but we have been having a lot of trouble with the eXRS and our end goal has always been to get UHF or VHF radios.

We are just trying to research the options so we know what we are getting. Something with good range, lots of options for accessories and the right price.

Hey Olddog,

I forgot to ask you at the field if that was you we came upon during the night game?  The person was using night vision and was about 100 meters from the insertion point and the small fort--next to the netting.

Ghostman
Royals

Night vision?!  Are you shitting me?!
Bulldog

Not just night vision, gen 3 night vision.   Twisted Evil
olddog

Yes that was me. Buckshot from Hellions and I worked that side around 8:30pm. OD
Royals

How much did that set you back and how does that work with a mask on?
olddog

You don"t even want to know ( $2000). No problems. OD
Royals

God that is awesome.

What are your thoughts on getting a longer barrel for my Apex?  I've heard that you start losing power at a certain length but I think a 12" barrel with and Apex tip might be right on the edge.
olddog

I looked at the Apex, it all depends on your style of play and the paint you use, those thing are hard on paint and you need to be the kind of player that takes the time to us it.

I myself any not, I am more concerned with leadership and mission scoring. So I tend to be middle of something all the time.

We are getting a little of topic here so if you would like to talk about this more start a new thread in the general paintball section. OD

Phiber and I continued down the path you suggested and were able to shoot out 3 or 4 guys who were laying in wait to ambush someone...the fourth guy we could not tell if he actually called himself out.  But it was all fun and exciting.

We ended up taking that fort, but the ref we spoke to there said there were no points associated with it.  So then we headed over to the main castle and took that over for about 10 minutes.  At that point it was reinforced by several opfor.

Not my first night game, but it was my first big event night game.  The motion detection lights were a great idea.
Royals

So I am orderding my radio tonight.  Do we need to order anymore or are we all set?
Bulldog

Here's Mill's Puxing review, posted on the Underground Mod Shop.
olddog

They come with a ear bud but they suck, so you might want to get a throat mic. OD
Royals

How do you guys feel about the handsets?
olddog

You talking about that the radios themselves? There great. OD
Royals

I'm sorry, I meant the speaker attachment you can get like most police officers have or do you recommend the throat mic?
olddog

There fine if you don't have to be quiet. 20ft away you can't hear the, but. OD
Royals

So my radio and a Tac Hopper are on the way.  I'm debating on whether or not to buy the standard grip to replace my E-Grip since I don't plan on using auto or even response.  Or I could just hold out and buy a back up marker.
Bingo

e grip i useless as you will have to go with the semi auto as most or all events will not let you use egrips. Now if you do the egrip in semi will help with quick firing.  Just my two cents......if you do not have the back up yet I would suggest getting it then as you do not know what will happen at a game or before. Confused
Royals

Yeah, I wish I would have known that a lot of places don't allow e-grips.  I have mine currently programmed to response and luckily I have a selector switch.  However, that is also somewhat of a bad thing.  The guy at the chrono booth at red dragon was giving me shit for having a selector switch and made me show him I had it set to response and said I better not reprogram it.

So, it looks like replacement gun falls before the new vest and camo I think I'll be able to swing another A-5 before Blood Fest.

Why not just buy a non-selector egrip as a spare, or even a non-egrip?    If you currently have the A-5 HE grip with selector switch, I'll give you a stock grip and some cash for it.   PM me an asking price.   Alternately, I may be up for selling my whole A5 to you as a spare, so I can pick up the new E-P X7 Phenom.

How do you guys like the RAP4 markers?  If I join the team, I was thinking next season I would pick one up as I get more into the sport.  I realize right now I'm new and super enthusiastic about everything right now, so much that I'm even annoying myself.  However, I think this is something I'd stick with.

I myself don't have a Rap4 marker, but some of the guys on the team like Kazoo and Bulldog have the T98 or whatever type marker, magazine fed and stuff. The things rip.

As for something you would stick with...i speak for myself and others do relate. Rap4 markers remind me alot of like Tippmanns the way they are heavy duty and great for the woods. And much like a realistic gun. But as far as paintball across the board goes, might not be such a great marker overall when playing other games not so scenario / woodsball.

But if your only going to be playing scenarios and woodsball. Great markers.
olddog

They seam to be well built and reliable, but the size make them difficult to use. OD
Royals

So I found thishttp://www.rap4.com/paintball/os/tippmann-machine-body-p-5227.html on the rap4 website.  I know it mostly cosmetic, however, it does offer a raised sight rail/carrying handle and weaver rails and would still allow me to get that MilSim look and use my apex as well as mount a flashlight and one of those nifty folding grips, not too mention represent a sponsor.

What are your thoughts?
Bulldog

Adds quite a bit of weight.   That's not a big deal when you're playing short games at a local field, but at a 24-hour scenario game you'll regret it by hour 3.
kazoo38

So far I am the only one man enough to carry a decked out tippman for long games. Smile Gun weighs around 12lbs and my pack is usualy around 40lbs. But on a serious note red dots, scopes, etc just dont work worth a crap. the best thing you can do is shoot a lot of paint and get to know your gun well. Start placing targets at different distances, moving targets, and stationary targets while you are on the move. Play with the team as much as you can so you know their styles of play.

OD is a leader and generaly stays back to direct and take care of advancers

Dirty and Hollywood are the speed of the team and like to get in the mix

Bulldog is our Macgyver and loves buying new toys and making serious modifications. He is a sneaky bastard that will dredge through the mud just to snipe someone.

and I love to sling a ton of paint to cover dirty and hollywood not to mention command the biggest butt wooping ever given to an oponent by Delta Squad (as far as i know anyway) Smile

Anyway, before you go spending a ton of money like I did, talk to people that are using what you want and see if it is worth it. The only stock piece on my A5 is the shell. Looks bad as hell but I could have bought a high end space gun that shoots a hell of a lot further and accurate than a tippman but like you seem to, I love the looks of it.

Anyway keep asking the questions and this group will save you a ton of money and heartache.

My 2 cents....

Kazoo
Royals

Yeah, I think I will end up buying that machine gun case/shell.  I'm a tought guy and I think I can bear the weight.  No regrets here.  And I know it's mainly just for looks but I'm allowed to have some guily pleasures on my gun.  I mean, you have to like the gun you play with and I won't complain about having a marker that looks like it is out of some Ridley Scott or Paul Verhoven film.

Also, I know this is looking a little far ahead, but it's a good thing to keep the sponsors happy and I would like to think that one day I could mount a Land Warrior on my marker.

Edit:  My radio arrived today.  However, with the current antenna it doesn't fit in my radio pouch.  I do think a throat mic would be a good investment.
Fets

Might want to consider a radio pouch like this... I use one and love it.

Royals

I was talking to Bulldog and he recommended I get a head set that actually fits inside my mask.
Bulldog

Earbone transducer

Helmet Headset for Kenwood/Puxing

Once you have your Tactical 10 vest you can get a MOLLE mount for one of Fets radio pouches, which might be cheaper- and is definitely more readily available- than one of the custom ones DK or I make.
Bulldog

Found you a scope:

Royals

What is that Frankensteinesque scope?

Also, do you have a link to that headset?
Bulldog

The scope is actually a stealth hopper for A5s, X7s, and other cyclone-fed markers.

The headset link is in the post above that.
Royals

So, there was a lot of excess string on my vest for fitting it.  Did you all cut that off?
Bulldog

Sorry, missed that question earlier: I figured out how much length I needed, left a little extra in case I got fat(er) or sold it, then cut it off.   Hold a match or lighter to the cut end to melt it together or it will fray like crazy.
