Red Dragon: Hatfield & McCoy Users Guide & RulesGame Specific Rules
1. No Radios can be used. Come on, stop complaining, we’re playing a game based on post civil war times! You’re lucky you can use your semi-auto markers! HEHEHE
2. Bounty Hunters are eliminated by head shots only
3. In order to score points for eliminating Devil or Rand’l, there must be a head shot or barrel tag. Any other elimination will not give points.
4. All communication with the Mayor is via runner. Each team will need to designate a runner and will be notified when missions are to be picked up.
5. Any player carrying a game prop that is eliminated must drop the prop where they are eliminated and continue off the field. This includes receipts given when selling moonshine to the General Store. The prop is still in play.
6. All currency will be in forms of receipts from the General Store. Don’t lose them, they will not be re-issued.
7. All bribes can only be offered to the Mayor, so don’t try to sweeten up the bounty hunters on their own. If you offer, they could just flip on their own.
8. Bartering is allowed with the Mayor, Olmstead and Bomberry.

Missions
Each team will have two, mulit-part, secret missions to complete during the game. One will be given in each half of the game and must be completed per the directions on the mission card. If there are no deisignated time limits, then the mission is ongoing and you will have until the end of the game to complete it. These will be given to you when the time is right.
Each team will also receive a list of family heirlooms that will need to be found on the field, and secured for the entire game for points. You will have free roam of the field (within the boundaries of course) to search for the heirlooms. You have the freedom to do what you need to do in order to secure as many heirlooms as possible.
There will be a number of hogs that will be hidden on the field through out the day. Locate these hogs, place them in your family’s designated pen, and you will receive points for each one. Once again, you will have free roam of the field (within the boundaries of course) to search for these hogs. You have the freedom to do what you need to do in order to secure as many hogs as possible. Remember to keep a watchful eye on your pen!
There will be a number of jugs filled with Moonshine hidden throughout the field. You are to collect these jugs, return them to one of the General Stores in Maetwan for cash. You can use this cash to buy bounty hunters through out the day. Prices to be determined at time of sale. You will only be able to purchase 4 bounty hunters at one time. Prices will be negotiated with the game controller in person.
Eliminate Devil and Rand’l by headshot or barrel tag .
J.W.’s Hint: Research the history behind the feud, as the missions are based on historical facts and events.

Point Breakdown
Each secret mission will have individual point values and will be clearly identified on the mission card.
Each family heirloom will be assigned different values. No one will know the values unless you meet up with the antique appraiser in Maetwan. The appraiser will review the list and provide you with point values for each heirloom. The values will fluctuate based on which family is in possession of each heirloom. It is not required that you meet with the appraiser, but the information provided could be of some use. If you find your family in a pinch for money, visit the appraiser and sell an heirloom. If your initial meeting goes well, there may be a chance that the appraiser will grant your team bonus points, and offer some good purchase prices in the future, so be NICE!
Each pig found will be valued according to their size – small, medium and large. Small pigs are worth 3pts, medium are worth 7pts and large are worth 15pts. At the end of the first half, your pen will be counted, and points will be calculated by the nearest ref. The pen will be emptied and the pigs will be placed on the field to be collected again. The pens will be counted and points totaled again, after lunch.
J.W.’s Hint: I suggest you have someone present for the counting to make sure the city folk aren’t cheatin’ ya’. You know how those smooth talkers operate!
The jugs of moonshine will be valued based on their size. Prices are subject to change and will be determined once you arrive. Prices are based on quantity and quality. You will not get less then $3 per ¼ gallon, $5 per ½ gallon and $10 per gallon. The quality of the moonshine will be based on three levels – A, B, C. “A” being the best, “C” being the worst. The quality of the moonshine will be clearly marked on the jug. Hours of operations are at the discretion of the attendant, so plan your trip to the store accordingly. Once you exchange your moonshine, a receipt will be given with the total amount of funds your team has received from the sale. This will be the only proof you have of the amount of money your team has, so don’t lose it.
J.W.’s Hint: I suggest you send a person that has good negotiation skills to the general store to work with the purchase prices. A good negotiator could get top dollar for your moonshine.
Eliminating Devil and Rand’l will score your family 10pts per elimination. Must be a head shot or barrel tag. Each character will be specially marked, and if someone on your team eliminates them with a headshot or barrel tag, make sure they tell the nearest ref in order to receive the correct points.

Bounty Hunters
Bounty Hunters will be available to purchase from the mayor through out the game. The price is determined at the time of purchase, as well as the amount of bounty hunters you will need. All purchases must be made in person per the directive of the head of the family. The minimum amount of bounty hunters that can purchased is one, the maximum is four. It’s a first come, first serve basis. Prepare properly, as it takes time for the bounty hunters to arrive on site and prepare for their job. Once they are ready, they will report directly to you for assignment.
Bounty Hunters are specialized soldiers, therefore they can only be eliminated with head shots. Be careful with them as well, as they fight for money, not honor, and can be easily persuaded to jump sides for extra money or mayoral bribes. All bribes are to be directed to the mayor. Once one is received, the mayor will contact the current employer of the bounty hunters via runner to inform them a bribe has arrived to see if there is a counter offer. If a counter offer is not rec’d in 5mins, the mayor will contact the bounty hunters and inform them of their new allegiance.

Full Text | Quote: | Dear Devil/Rand’l,
Greetings, saluations, and good ol’ fashioned hello. The name is J. W. Olmstead. I’m the owner of the Maetwan General Store. I’ve been asked by the great mayor of Maetwan, Jamie Bailey, to get in touch with you about the troubles you’re having with the McCoys/Hatifields. Personally, I don’t know much about what you’re up against, but I can offer a little help with the way our great city works and what you can expect to face when you’re running around out there. I’ve done a little research on the matter, and boy, I’ll tell ya’, the more I read, the better it gets. The news just keeps wiring in about you two families. Here’s what I’ve found out so far, I hope it’s useful.
Sincerely,
J.W. Olmstead |
History
According to historian Michel Sellers, the feud began when a Hatfield wanted to marry a McCoy, but the clans disagreed and strife resulted. "Most people believe that the Hatfield-McCoy feud began with the death of Asa Harmon McCoy (Randall McCoy's brother) on January 7, year unknown." The uncle of Devil Anse, Jim Vance, and his "Wildcats" despised Hans Hall McCoy because he had joined the Union army. Harmon had been discharged from the army early because of a broken leg; several nights after he returned home, he was murdered in a nearby cave.
The first recorded instance of violence in the feud occurred after an 1873 dispute about the ownership of a hog: Floyd Hatfield had it and Randolph McCoy said it was his. But in truth, the dispute was over land or property lines and the ownership of that land. The pig was only in the fight because one family believed that since the pig was on their land, that meant it was theirs; the other side objected. The matter was taken to the local Justice of the Peace, and the McCoys lost because of the testimony of Bill Staton, a relative of both families. The individual presiding over the case was Anderson "Preacher Anse" Hatfield. In June 1880, Staton was killed by two McCoy brothers, Sam and Paris, who were later acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. But the court decided later on it was not self-defense; it was murder in the first degree.
The feud escalated after Roseanna McCoy began an affair with Johnse Hatfield (Devil Anse's son), leaving her family to live with the Hatfields in West Virginia. Roseanna eventually returned to the McCoys, but when the couple tried to resume their relationship, Johnse Hatfield was kidnapped by the McCoys and was saved only when Roseanna made a desperate ride to alert Devil Anse Hatfield, who organized a rescue party.
Despite what was seen as a betrayal of her family on his behalf, Johnse thereafter abandoned the pregnant Roseanna, marrying instead her cousin Nancy McCoy in 1881.
The escalation continued in 1882 when Ellison Hatfield, brother of "Devil Anse" Hatfield, was brutally murdered by three of Roseanna McCoy's brothers, Tolbert, Pharmer, and Bud. Ellison was stabbed 26 times and finished off with a shot. The brothers were themselves murdered in turn as the vendetta escalated. They were kidnapped and tied to pawpaw bushes, where each was shot numerous times. Their bodies were described as "bullet-riddled."
Between 1880 and 1891, the feud claimed more than a dozen members of the two families, becoming headline news around the country and compelling the governors of both Kentucky and West Virginia to call up their state militias to restore order after the disappearance of dozens of bounty hunters sent to calm the conflict.

Dear Devil/Rand’l,
So, I hope the information was helpful. It gives me the idea that this little “problem” you’re having isn’t going to stop for some time. So what I’ve gathered, you’re up against Devil/Rand’l, who I’m assuming is the leader, or elder, of the Hatfield/McCoy family. Talk about some crazy guys! I bet you can trace that blood line straight down to the caveman days! That’s one wild bunch of ya-hoos! Here’s all the info I could gather about your adversary and a few other tidbits I’ve found about some local know-who’s that might be of some interest
Sincerely,
J.W. Olmstead |

Dear Devil/Rand’l,
That Devil/Rand’l guy sounds like a real pistol, huh? So, I’ve been keeping my ears open on street ever since Mayor Bailey asked me to help you out a bit, and I’ve heard some rumblings and rumors about some “happenings” so to say. I guess you there are some proper rules of engagement and certains that you could do to help out your cause. I look forward to hearing from you really soon.
Sincerely,

| Quote: | Dear Devil/Rand’l,
Well, it’s about time you asked some questions. Yeah, there’s value to everything! Being the successful merchant that I am, I know my way around the dollar. I don’t know much about family heirlooms or antiques, but I know the local dealer well, and he’ll be able to give you a “fair” value (if you catch my drift) if you drop my name. As for the price of other goods, you’re talking to the right guy. Visit my General Store and I’ll see what I can do for you. It all depends on what you have, and what the current economic situation looks like for me at that time. The mornings are usually much better in regards to pricing because people are rushing in and out of the store buying stuff up. But, once lunch hits, business tends to slow down, so prices tend to drop. I can’t have too my surplus on my hands.
Sincerely,

| Quote: | Dear Devil/Rand’l,
Hey guy. I was rubbing elbows with a few city politicians and I overheard that the Mayor is getting some heavy heat from the State and Feds because of your little “tisk” with the McCoys/Hatfields. Well, anyway, he’s hired a bunch of bounty hunters, or I guess, you can call them mercenaries. Their allegiance doesn’t lie with anyone until you give them the right amount of money. You know how that works. But, anyways, he has a small army gunning for you and McCoy/Hatfield. If you play your cards right and talk with the mayor, you might be able to get a couple of these pitbulls to help you out. No one wants to be on the losing end of a fight with bounty hunters, you know?
Sincerely,
J.W. Olmstead |

Well, I hope I helped you out as much as possible. I’m always available to ask questions, so shoot away. How much I can answer is a whole different story! If you see the Mayor sometime, make sure you tell him I did a good job for you. It’s always nice having a guy like that in your back pocket when you need him. Good luck, and duck if you hear gun fire!
Sincerely,
J.W. Olmstead |
