Sherwood Forest Rocket Launchers- Who'll Carry One?

Ok, so I have all the parts priced out for these, now I need to know how many to make...

-The weight is going to be about 7 lbs.
-"Trigger" mechanism will be a brass lever/ball valve.
-They will have Schraeder valve hookups and can be filled from any remote line. If there is interest, I can pick up some 12 gram fill adapters.
-They will have a 125psi blow-off valves so you'll know when they're full.
-They will have shoulder straps and barrel covers.
-They shoot Nerf Rockets, which I have for sale for $4.50 each, and will buy back from you for $4.00 each.

They aren't super expensive to construct, but I don't want to make 6 of these and have nobody carry them- but I also under stand that not everyone is going to want to lug that extra weight around the whole time- especially the Daggers who need to move fast, and Heavy Gunners who are already carrying lots of paint.

So what I'd like here is for those going to Sherwood to answer the poll, so I have an idea of how many to do.

Last year we spent a lot of time running away from airplanes, choppers, and tanks because NOBODY had a damn launcher, which is the only way to take them down.

I'm planning to spend some time with a launcher as my primary, and either the B-5 or the T8 strapped on.

I have been looking at one of these thing, would be interrested in having one all the time, what are they made out of? ( I have access to thin wall aluminum tubing if it will save on the weight. Olddog

Do you have the facilities to weld air-tight canisters? Once I nail down the air volume required to launch Nerfs at the speed limit with 125psi, it would be nice to be able to put together a bunch of lightweight air reservoirs to replace the steel pipe ones I'm using now. They'd just need to have a 3/4" bung on one end, and maybe two 1/4" bungs somewhere for the input and BOV.

No problem with the welding. Do you have a drawing of one of these I would like to see what you have made? Olddog

So far it's just an 18" piece of 1.25" pipe, capped on one end and going through a reducer into a brass .75" ball valve on the other. The Ball valve comes out into a .75" to 2" PVC threaded adapter, and then a length of 2" black ABS pipe goes into that.

For testing I use a 1" T fitting down to a .25" T with a threaded tire valve in one end and a blow-off valve in the other. I need to get some different lengths of pipe to play with until I can make a consistent sub-230fps speed at 125PSI.

For production I would skip the T and drill and tap holes in the main pipe for the fill and BOV. I'm also trying to find some plunger-style valves with squeeze lever actuation. They shouldn't be much more expensive than the ball-valves, but will open a LOT faster and without affecting aim as much.

For an aluminum reservoir, 2" tubing would be best, as it would match the barrel and let us do the shortest reservoir possible. It might be possible to just use an old CO2 tank with the pin valve removed, though you don't need the walls to be that thick for 125psi.

I found a wedsite that someone made one of these that looked sweet, he wanted a arm and leg for it but it gave me some ideas on building one. I will forward it to you when I get home. Olddog

Are you going to make a couple of the ones you have for sherwood, I will carry one all day.

Looking at aluminum tubing today, how much and what OD, ID and lenth do you think we need to make a three of these for the team? Do you have any idea how many shots you get out of one 12 gram? I have a two quick change units we can use if this is the best way to go. Olddog

I'll be making at least two12gram units, more if I can come up with an LP reservoir. For the 12gram units you just need to dump into a 1' by 6" steel pipe and have a metal valve. That's a lot smaller and lighter than the LP system.

Consensus from the forums is that for a 150psi launcher we'd want more than 20oz to do the deed- maybe 30 would do it. Need to have about double the barrel volume in LP reservoir volume. So if the barrel is 2" diameter and 18" long, the reservoir should be... 4" diameter and 18" long /3" diameter and 24" long (?) Math ain't my strong point, especially in the AM.

Ok then, what do you think about using HPA out of your remote bottles?
We could have a separrate hose from the reg and rechage the unit as needed
,could even have a couple of the hoses on other players in the group.

I can make a push button or trigger release for the unit and build a safety into it so we can have them charged and ready on the field. Olddog

I have a couple 1/8" screw-in schraeder valves, and was going to put tire chucks on reducers to remote line QD nipples and just charge them until the 150psi BOV hisses. A reg would help though- but getting one to go from 800psi to 150 could be pricey.

I have a Air America reg that goes to 0 and I know the one on my intimidator goes to 0 to ( timmy work on 250 psi) and I know the regs on cockers goes to 0, so I don't thing this will be a problem. Olddog

Lets just go with your simple version for now. and I will take one for this weekend. olddog
