I just a email from the admin. of the court. The county (Franklin) is offering a class for beginners for learning spanish and the fee is 70.00.

WHY THE HELL ARE WE NOT TELLING THEm TO LEARN ENGLISH!!! IT IS AMERICA NOT MEXICO....YOU WANT TO SPEAK SPANISH THEN GO BACK TO MEXICO.......OUR FOREFATHERS ARE ROLLING IN THE GRAVES

God,  I am sick in tired of us bending over for these freaking people. My grandparents came through Ellis Island in 1927 from Germany (they saw the writing on the wall with Hitler). They were required to learn English and pass the test. Also had to have a job with in si months, and a sponsor, citizen, for them. We will become a minor race in America or we are there already.

Sorry for the rany guys.

It really does not matter who wins the election. WE ARE TOAST!! We will be a third world country with any of the candidates that are running for President. IMO!!

Is the class being offered specifically because there is an increase in Spanish speaking residents in Columbus, or just as a general education class for people who would want to learn a second language?

Though I agree that the official language of the United States is English, and that anyone who wants to have a permanent job or residence in the US should be required to speak English fluently, I think that learning a second language, especially Spanish since it is the second most widely used language in the world (next to mandarin Chinese), would be a good thing for America and help keep it from becoming that third world country.

Nearly 50% of Europeans speak 2 languages fluently, and 20% speak three or more.  Compare that to 18% in America, according to the Year 2000 census, of which 9% were people who are not native born citizens.

Now in Europe, people probably need to know multiple languages because there are so many so close that meeting someone who does not share your native tongue becomes common, and English is spoken in almost every country so it does seem pointless to need to know another, but there are many hidden benefits to it.

Studies have shown that people who learn multiple languages generally are able to learn more easily and score higher in tests involving a wide array of topics, from math, reading, language arts and science.  People also show greater cognitive development in areas such as mental flexibility, creativity, and higher level thinking skills.

Hell, people who know multiple languages also tend to make more money on a yearly basis than someone of equal educational level in similar position.

Again, I'm not arguing against people being require to learn English when they come to the United States.  I just think this country as a whole could benefit in so many ways from something a simple as paying 70 bucks for self improvement.

Not me...it is America and learn English like my grandparents did when they immigrated to the United States. Call me redneck, but we are cowering to the illegals way to much and the other nationalitys. I am sorry if it offends anyone but why should we cower to other languages.

Hell even during the Civil War the French, Irish, and so on had to learn English when coming to here. I do agree that with some jobs it does help in advancing. But I and and others I know are also tired of bending to apase.

Just plain learn English it is that simple.

Titan Samali (How every you spell the name of the local people in "Black Hawk Down, don't wanna use the "slur" the military used in the conflict) is almost as prevelant as Spanish in the Columbus area.

It's so bad that some Non-English speakers are now dying becasue they can't tell 911 where they need to go in English and also they don't trust the Cops and are being SHOT by the cops becasue they don't understand "Put the GUN DOWN NOW!"  I feel like Bingo if you come here to live your first responsibility should be learn the language and ASSIMILATE into the American culture.  Unlike the BORG when assimilated you don't have to turn you back on your previous culture but you really need to be able to function in your new collective.  Don't stop speaking your native language but by golly learn what everyone else knows too!
